MA News 12/5/12

School News~
Progress reports went home yesterday. One copy should be signed and returned to school.
Christmas vacation starts on Monday, December 24th and school will be back in session of Monday, January 7th.
Grades 8-12 have adopted families for Christmas. Please talk to your child for the details.
Music News~
Thursday, December 6th the Chorus will be taking a field trip to the Marshall Rehabilitation Nursing Home (Atrium). They will depart MA at 1:45 and return by 3:00pm. All Chorus students must have a signed permission slip to attend.
Sports News~
Reminder~ The Middle School Boys Basketball team will be practicing off campus on Wednesday, December 5th and Wednesday, December 12th. They will be practicing at Cook's Prairie Church from 3:30 to 5:30. Transportation to and from Cook's Prairie Church WILL be provided by the school; however, if you would prefer to pick up your player the address is 6020 23 Mile Rd in Homer, MI. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Newland at newlandl@marshallacademy.org
MAPA NEWS~
Pizza forms were due Monday. If you would still like to purchase pizza for the month of December, please send in $10.50 by tomorrow morning. 
MAPA is raffling off a 4ft stocking filled with all sorts of goodies. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. The drawing will be at Opening Ceremony on Dec. 14th. Good luck!
Holiday Babysitting~ Need to get your Christmas shopping done? December 8th MAPA is sponsoring an afternoon of babysitting from 1:00 to 5:00pm. Activities will include crafts, snack, games and a movie for $10 per child ($30 max per family). The event is for all academy students and their siblings that are potty trained. Please stop in the office for a form.
"Stuff the Bus" has been a huge success so far! Thanks to those that have donated. Monday we collected can goods and today we collected dry/boxed goods. If you forgot, these items are still being accepted. Here is the schedule for the rest of the week.

MA News 11/27/12

School News~
Pizza forms went home on Monday. Pizza money is due no later than Monday, December 3rd. Please see attachment for a form.
HS Social Night
Social night will be hosted by the yearbook class on Saturday,December 1st from 6-10 pm. It costs $5 dollars and tickets can be purchased through November 29. There will be food, drinks, games, music, movies, gingerbread-making, and an ugly sweater contest.
Music News-
Our Chorus will be caroling Downtown Marshall this Friday, November 30th, at 6:00pm and 7:00pm for the Instrument Ensemble. Please remember to dress warm. More details to come.
Our Chorus will be singing at the Marshall Rehabilitation Nursing Home (Atrium) in Marshall on Thursday, Dec. 6th. This will be a field trip during the school day from 1:45 to 3:00. Mr. Knoch is in need of drivers. Permission slips are due by Tuesday, December 4th. Please see attachment.
~Save the date~ Christmas Concert Thursday, December 20th. The vocal portion starts at 6:30pm and the band portion at approx. 7:30pm.
MAPA News~
The Christmas tree sale is going on now( immediately after school, in the parking lot) until Friday, November 30th and on Saturday, December 1st from 9-11:30am. All trees are $25. Get yours before we run out.
MAPA wants to "Stuff the Bus" during the week of December 3rd through December 7th with non perishable goods to donated to a local food bank. Each day will have a different theme.
Monday 12/3 is can goods day
Tuesday 12/4 is dry/boxed goods day.
Wednesday 12/5 is peanut butter and jelly day
Thursday 12/6 is toiletries day
Friday 12/7 is dry breakfast food day
Holiday Shopping Babysitting

MA News 11/13/12

School News~
Thanksgiving is next week! Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday there will be no school. (November 21st-November 23rd)
If you forgot to turn in your MA spirit wear order form and you would still like to order, the deadline has been extended to this Thursday November 15th. The order will be placed on Friday, so we will be unable to accept late orders.
 
Sports News~
The Pansophia Basketball Game for MS Boys has changed to 6:00pm on Thursday, November 15th.
MAPA & NHS/ NJHS News~
MAPA and NHS/NJHS will be selling fresh cut Christmas trees on:
Monday, November 26th through Friday, November 30th after school until 4:30 in the parking lot.
Saturday, December 1st from 9-11:30
All trees only $25!
If you would like to order gift cards for Christmas, we have a list of vendors in the office. you may also go to www.glscrip.com to view a list. Please email your scrip orders (gift card) orders to Mary Stage at stagem@marshallacademy.org. We also have some gift cards on hand in the office. These make great teacher gifts as well :)
Art News~
Art to Remember packets were due Monday. Please turn your packets in asap. If you would like to keep the magnet, please enclose a $5. Thanks for help fund the Art Department.
Music News~
There is no after school band today or tomorrow due to play rehearsals.
Drama News~
Marshall Academy presents THE GOLDEN COCKEREL adapted for the stage by our senior, Andrew Holtz.
The play is this Sunday, November 18th at 2:00pm in the gymnasium. $4/adult $2 student/child. We hope to see you there!

MA News 10/30/012

School News~
Reminder~ IT IS THE END OF THE FIRST MARKING PERIOD THIS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND. THERE WILL BE A HALF DAY & ALL STUDENTS WILL DISMISS AT 11:30.
Conference slips were sent home. If you didn't receive one from your child, they are available in the office. These are due on Friday, November 2nd.
CU In School starts Tuesday, November 6th. Remember to bring in your deposits! If you need to open an account, there are forms available in the office. Remember little deposits each week add up :) If your child  would like to help out with CU in School, volunteer forms are available too.
PICTURE RETAKES WILL BE MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5th. If you would like your child to have retakes, a new picture form must be filled out. Picture forms are available in the office.
Student Council News~
HS Scavenger Hunt~ 8-12th Grade Scavenger Hunt is this Saturday night, November 3rd from 8-11PM. Tickets are $5. Ticket sales have been extended to Friday.
 
Drama News~
~Save the Date~ The High School Play, The Golden Cockerel, will be Sunday, November 18th at 2 PM. The Golden Cockerel is a Russian Fable adapted for the stage by senior Andrew Holtz.
ART NEWS~
Art to Remember is coming again for grades K-6! In a couple weeks your child will be bringing home an order envelope containing: your child's artwork, a 4"x5" preview magnet featuring your child's artwork that can be purchased, and a letter explaining the program and product prices, brochure, and order form. The money earned will be used to purchase materials and supplies for the art room.
MUSIC NEWS~
There will be not be Chorus on Wednesday morning, October 31st.
Varsity band will be performing two songs during opening ceremony on Wednesday, October 31st
SPORTS NEWS~
The Applebee's Pancake breakfast is this Saturday, November 3rd from 8:00am to 10:00am at the Marshall Applebee's. Tickets are $5 each, $20 max per family. Tickets are available in the office. We hope to see you there! All proceeds will go to the Athletic Department.
Varsity boys & girls basketball practice starts Monday, November 12th. Every student that would like to participate, must have a sports physical on file dated after April 15, 2012.
MAPA NEWS~
MAPA would like to provide food for the teachers during Parent/Teacher conferences. If you would like to contribute, please contact the office for a list of items that are being requested.
NEXT WEEK THERE WILL NOT BE SCHOOL ON THURSDAY OR FRIDAY, November 8th and 9th.

MA NEWS 10/23/12

Hello.....Lots of upcoming events!!!!
SCHOOL NEWS:
School pictures have gone home. If you didn't purchase a package, but would like to, there are order forms in the office. If you would like your child to have retakes, you will need to return your picture package and fill out a new form. Picture retakes are MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5th.
The End of the First Marking Period is Friday, November 2nd. ALL STUDENTS WILL BE DISMISSED AT 11:30.
Parent/ Teacher conferences will be Wednesday, November 7th from 5-8pm and Thursday November 8th, from 8am -11:30am.
THERE WILL BE NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS ON NOVEMBER 8th & 9th.
Conference forms will go home Monday, October 29th, and will need to be returned by Friday, November 2nd. Teachers will schedule conferences on Monday, November 5th and you will be notified of your time on Tuesday.
November 3rd is the HS Scavenger Hunt! It will be from 8-11pm at the school. Tickets are $5.
Monday, November 5th is Kellogg Community college night from 6-8pm at the Kellogg Arena (1 McCamly Square, Battle Creek). Over 50 colleges and universities will be represented along with the Military.There will be a financial aid presentation from 6:30-7:15 and representatives will be available for questions.
MAPA NEWS:
Thank you to all the families that came out for the Harvest Party. We had a great turn out! We hope that everyone had a great time!
The next MAPA meeting is Tuesday, November 13th. All parents are invited.
The next Hot Dog lunch will be Friday, November 16th. All proceeds will fund the Art Department.
Pizza forms went home this week. Order forms and payment are due by Monday, October 29th.
Thanks to MAPA and the parents that donated money to Ms. Renkowski, now all High School students will receive issues of Upfront Magazine! This magazine features, national and international news, articles for debate, and political cartoons. Awesome!
SPORTS NEWS:
MS Boys Basketball will start Monday, November 29th. A sports physical is required in order to participate. The first game will be Thursday, November 8th (more details to come).
There will be a Pancake Breakfast at Applebee's on Saturday, November 3rd from 8-10am. All proceeds will go to the Athletic Department. Tickets are available for purchase at the office or some athletes are selling them as well. Tickets are $5 each or $20 max. per family. Tickets include ALL YOU CAN EAT PANCAKES, sausage, and your choice of coffee, milk, or juice.
On October 27th from 5-8pm, there will be a Jr. High and Varsity Football party. Notices are going home with the players today with the details.

Harvest Party!

Remember the Harvest Party is tomorrow night, Oct. 20th, from 6-8pm. The whole family is invited. There will be plenty of food, fun, & games. Also, there will be an artist on sight doing sketched portraits for $3. Student Council will be holding a pumpkin contest. If you have an already carved or decorated pumpkin that you would like to enter, don't forget to bring it with you. We hope to see everyone there!

MICHIGAN VS. MICHIGAN STATE CHANGE WAR

 

The winner MICHIGAN STATE raised $187.17!

Michigan raised $89.49

In 4 days, there was a total of $276.66 raised for playground equipment!!!!

 

There will be a jeans day tomorrow, Friday, October 19th, but you must wear MICHIGAN STATE colors!

 Remember jeans must be school appropriate (no holes, tears, etc).

MA NEWS 10/15/12

Happy Monday!
This Saturday, October 20th is the Harvest Party from 6-8pm in the gymnasium. There will be food, fun, and games. Remember to bring in an already carved or decorated pumpkin if you would like to participate in the pumpkin contest. Votes will be cast with spare change and the proceeds will go to Student Council.

Wednesday, October 17th, the 2nd Grade class will be going to The Country Mill, apple orchard, and pumpkin patch for a field trip. They will be leaving at 8:30 and returning at noon.

*SAVE THE DATE * There will be a pancake breakfast at Applebee's on November 3rd from 8-10am. The proceeds will go to the Athletic Department. Please see attachment for the ticket order form.
CU in School will be coming to our school to start taking deposits on Tuesday, November 6th. If your child would like to set up an account with the Marshall Community Credit Union, forms are available in the office. There will be a CU in School kickoff presentation at Opening Ceremony on October 22.

Saturday, November 3rd from 8pm to 11pm there will be a scavenger hunt for grades 8-12 at the school. There will be food and prizes. Any parents that would like to be in the scavenger hunt, please contact Leslie Katz at katzl@marshallacademy.org or the school office at 269-781-6330.

Change War started today for Michigan VS. Michigan State. Bring in change to vote for you favorite team! All proceeds will go towards athletics/playground equipment.

MA News 10/2/12

Happy October! Here's the latest....
MEAP testing begins next week. Please make sure your child eats well and gets a good night sleep, so he/she can give their best performance.
Pizza forms for October were due Monday. Please turn them in, no later than tomorrow, if your child would like pizza lunch this month. The cost is $14 for the month.
Sports News~ Way to go Tekonsha Indians. We won our homecoming game by 2 points! Nice work!
Tonight's (Tuesday, October 2nd) Girls Middle School Volleyball at Paragon will start at 4:30 instead of 5:00 and October 16th the game against Pansophia has been CANCELLED :(
Girls Volleyball will be selling pumpkins again this Friday immediately after school. Prices range form $1-$4.
MAPA NEWS~ Save the Date~ The Fall Harvest Party is scheduled for Saturday, October 20th, from 6-8pm. There will be lots of food and games. We hope to see everyone there!
There will be hot dog lunch this Friday, October 5th.
Hot dogs $1.50, Cheese dog $2, Nacho chips w/ cheese $2, Chips .50 and juice box .50.
ELEMENTARY STUDENTS will need a form filled out along with their money. Please remember to put your child's name on the form.
We are in need of substitute teachers. Stop by the office and pick up a sub packet, if you are interested or know anyone who is looking for some part-time work.

MA News 9/18/12

Happy Tuesday! Here's the latest and greatest....
Picture Day is Friday, September 28th (retakes are scheduled for Monday, November 5th). Order forms went home on Monday, there are extra forms in the office. Uniforms are required for this picture day. The fall portrait is the picture that will appear in the yearbook and on the class composites. Seniors will wear their uniforms as well.
Thanks to all the parents that attended the first MAPA meeting. It was great to see a lot of new faces. The next MAPA meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 9th, immediately following opening ceremony. All parents are invited.
Student Council is selling ice cream for $1 during lunch on Wednesdays.
Pizza forms for October will go home on September 24 and they will be due October 1st.
HS play auditions are today (November 18th) and tomorrow (November 19th) after school from 3:30-4:30.
Exciting Things are scheduled to happen in Ms. Renkowski's classrooms!
Ms. Ren has the following speakers scheduled:
Monday, September 24th~ 6th period, Mr. Tony Warren from the Calhoun Area Career Center (CACC) will speak to College Prep students about Career Pathways and the classes the facility offers for on-the-job training.
Tuesday, September 25th~ 1st period, Mr. Barry Philips and Mr. Henry 'Tiq" Bush from the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Indians will speak to 8th grade American History students about Native American culture and history. They were at the Academy last year, and the students LOVED them!
Thursday, September 27~Ms. Stacy Mills will speak to junior students about MSU. We are thrilled to have a "big school" visit our small (but powerful) one.
Monday, October 1~ Ms. Paula Manly will speak to juniors about the work of the League of Women Voters in preparation for the upcoming mock election here at the academy as well as the nationwide election in November.
Chilly weather is quickly approaching, please make sure to send your child to school with the appropriate jackets/coats for outside recess.

MA News 4/17/12

Hello,
This year is coming to an end quickly! There are lots of things going on in the remaining weeks! Here are a few things to keep in mind.
MAPA ELECTIONS
MAPA met today and these are the nominees they have so far:
President : Kelly Cool, Mary Nash, Dawn Gillaspie
Vice President: Kathy Swett, Deb Palmer, Mary Nash, & Sonja Wirebaugh
Treasurer: Mary Kempinski
Secretary: Laura Smith
If you would like to make a nomination, please contact the office at 269-781-6330. Feel free to nominate yourself, if you are interested in holding a position.
Elections will be held from 8:00am to 3:30pm on Monday, May 7th and from 8:00 to 8:30 am May 8th. The winners will be announced at the MAPA meeting on May 8th, immediately following opening ceremony. Ballots will be available in the office Monday, May 7th.
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 7th-11th - Wednesday, May 9th MAPA will be hosting a teacher luncheon. We are in need of 4 parent volunteers to supervise students for lst lunch from 11:15 to noon and 4 parent volunteers to supervise students for 2nd lunch from 12:00 to 12:45. Please contact the office if you are interested in covering. 269-781-6330
Scantron Testing is going on April 16th-27th for grades k-7th. Please encourage your child to do their best! Make sure they get a good night sleep and a good breakfast each day.
Hungry Howie's Fundraiser Wednesday, April 18th. -Tomorrow is our Hungry Howie's Fundraiser day/night. Remember to place your lunch or dinner order. If we get at least 30 orders, 10% of the proceeds come back to the academy. The homeroom teacher with the most orders wins a pizza lunch party for their class.
Release Time Bible class is cancelled this week due to scantron testing and because the 5 & 6th grades will be at Sherman Lake Camp.
Sherman Lake Camp -5th & 6th Grade leave for camp on Wed. April 18th. Drivers should be at the school by 9am. Our students will be leaving camp on Friday, April 20th at 11:00am. All drivers should be at the camp no later than 11:00 am.
The Talent Show will be next Friday, April 27th. The time is TBD. Parents are invited to attend.
Senior Graduation will be Saturday, June 2nd at 6:00pm.

MA NEWS 3/27/12

HELLO,
A busy, but EXCITING week!
TONIGHT, Tuesday, March 27th
Please join us tonight as "Elvis Lives in Kalamazoo" comes live to the big stage at the Franke Center. Showtimes are at 6:30 & 7:30pm. Admission is free! (Donations welcome). Cast and Crew should be at the Franke at 5:30 sharp. MAPA will be selling congratulatory flowers in the lobby. T-shirts and cd's will also be available for purchase. Be sure to bring family and friends, it's going to be a great night!
Wednesday, March 28th
Full day of school~ Elementary students can wear jeans and a MARSHALL ACADEMY spirit wear shirt to celebrate our wrap up of March Reading Month. Remember to sign your child's reading log and have them turn it in on Wednesday. We get to see Mr. Swan perform a fitness test in front of the students at the reading party! It should be quite funny! (no offense Mr. Swan)
HS students that have been violation free this marking period (lists are posted in the hallways) can also wear jeans and a MARSHALL ACADEMY spirit wear shirt.
Please remember that the jeans must be appropriate, no holes. Students not dressed appropriately will have to call home for proper attire.
High School Parent Teacher Conferences begin Wednesday, March 28th at 4:00pm and end at 8:30pm. Elementary begins at 5:00pm and ends at 8:30 pm.

Save the Date


Bob Hays, the father of Aggie (who is a senior here at MA) and Robbie Hays, has been off from work since December 9 of last year and was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer mid-February.  He is beginning the process of chemo/radiation.

 We would like to invite everyone from Marshall Academy and the surrounding areas to a Pancake Breakfast Benefit to help the Hays family with their medical expenses. 


The Pancake Breakfast will be at Marshall Academy on Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 8 AM - 11 AM.  We hope to see you there.

MA News 3/13/12

Hello,
~Here are a few things going on this week~
Play practice has been cancelled for tonight (Tuesday, March 13th) for everyone (including the dancers).
Spring conference slips will go home today for parents to select a time slot. Please return the form by Friday, March 16th.
There will be a meeting tomorrow for all students and their parents who are interested in playing Spring Sports. The meeting will be after dismissal, on Wednesday, March 14th, in the gymnasium. We hope to see you there!
The Parent Action Committee Meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 15th, has been rescheduled again for Thursday, March 22nd. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Marshall Academy Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment for the 2012/2013 school year begins February 1st and goes through February 29th. Kindergarten Round up will be Wednesday, February 15th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm and Monday, February 27th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.
